I was a bit leery about this novella. On the one hand, The Star-Touched Queen just wasn’t working for me. On the other, I loved A Crown of Wishes. Unfortunately, Death and Night fell closer to the former as it told the tale of Amar and Maya before the events of TSTQ when it was only Death and Night.
Much like the first in the series, the writing is very descriptive and beautiful but suffered from the same fate where it was almost too much. I mean, it’s gorgeous, it really is, but even in a shorter story it felt drawn out and I was leaning against reading more.
I did enjoy the characters. Maya wasn’t a favorite of mine in TSTQ but I liked that her character is fleshed out more here, along with Amar’s. It expanded on the story of the first book so if that’s something you’re looking for, you’ll probably really enjoy this novella.
I guess I was just expecting more information? There’s a lot of vagueness and parts of the world in TSTQ that was never really answered and I thought that maybe a prequel novella would provide more insight on that but it really didn’t. The story focuses on the romance which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but not what I was looking for going into this novella. Once more there were aspects of the world and story that went unexplained and that’s just how it worked.
I’ll say that I did enjoy the novella more than TSTQ but I think that had to do with the length more than anything, which contained the story in a shorter time. It was alright and fans of the series are sure to love it. I’m just in that in-between place.
