Happy Game of Thrones Sunday, Knights!
Today marks the start of an EPIC readalong of the entire Song of Ice and Fire series hosted by me and Aly @ Of Wonderland! This is a 34-week long readalong that covers the first 5 books of the series (because that’s all we have right now!). Depending on interest with these books, we may extend the readalong to include the side book such as Fire & Blood and the novellas, but that’s a while away.
What you need to know:
To sign up, post your intentions to participate somewhere online! We do not have a designated platform for this readalong so wherever you like to talk about books is fine! Once you’ve posted somewhere online, share the link in this Google Form.
Track your reading progress with this spreadsheet! It’s designed to work for the entire challenge. You can print it out and use it, or save a copy online. The checkboxes will highlight the rows green every time you complete a new week’s readings to help you stay on track!
Today, June 2nd, kicks off book 1, A Game of Thrones. We will be reading the first book for 5 weeks, at around 150 pages each week (based on the LONGEST edition of the book we could find). Your actual page count may vary which is why we’ve divided the weekly readings by chapter!
June 2 to June 8 → Prologue – Chapter 15
June 9 to June 15 → Chapter 16 – Chapter 29
June 16 to June 22 → Chapter 30 – Chapter 41
June 23 to June 29 → Chapter 42 – Chapter 55
June 30 to July 6 → Chapter 56 – Chapter 72
The official readalong hashtag on ALL platforms is #IronThroneReadalong
Aly and I will be sharing discussions about the book on our blogs every other week. We won’t be summarizing what happened in each chapter but will have links to where you can read synopses. Instead, we wanted to focus on something related to that week’s reading to talk about to make things a bit more interesting.
You CAN read ahead. We won’t stop you! But please be conscious of potential spoilers if you’re discussing each week’s chapters on the Discord channel.
And speaking of Discord. . .
#IronThroneReadalong Discord Server
I mentioned in our announcement post that we would have a Discord server and it’s ready for all of you to join! The reason we went with Discord is because 1) it’s free; 2) there is both an online (desktop) and mobile version; and 3) we wanted something that would allow everyone to discuss freely and not require them to make a new Facebook or Twitter, etc.
Spoilers ARE allowed BUT must be hidden. Discord has a spoiler feature that allows you to hide them in your messages. We know how awful it can be to be spoiled for something and this readalong includes new readers who may not have seen the show. To avoid issues, we are requiring all spoilers be hidden. Anyone who does not follow this rule will be soft muted for 24 hours. Repeated offenses will be removed from the server entirely. We want this space to be fun for everyone so please be considerate of other readers.
Weekly reading discussions. There are channels where you can talk about each week’s readings with everyone else, broken down by book. These will remain open in case anyone jumps in late and wants to join the discussion!
Westerosi House chats. When you join the server, you’ll be given the option to join one of the Westerosi Houses. This will then allow you to chat in a House-specific channel with other people in the same house. We wanted to include this as an option so you could have a space to talk about things beyond Game of Thrones.
Book vs Show channels. Additionally, we had a feeling that many of you will either be watching the show or looking to discuss it during the readalong so we have a specific set of chats set up to talk about each season as well as a book vs show comparison space.
And a Giveaway!
Last, but not least, there WILL be a giveaway for all participants. One winner (open INTERNATIONALLY) will receive the leather-bound box set of the first 5 books. In the event that this box set is no longer available in late January 2020, we will find a suitable alternative.
The giveaway is open starting TODAY!
You can start adding in entries to the giveaway from today, June 2, 2019, until January 25, 2020 (the last day of the readalong). The only required entry is that you declare your intentions to participate in the readalong publicly (so we can verify at the end of the giveaway).
Additionally, you have the option to share an update on your reading progress each day, as well as follow your readalong hosts. This giveaway is open INTERNATIONALLY as long as Wordery ships free to you.
