Shelf Sequels | Wicked King Edition

Shelf Sequels #1

POSTED ON January 5, 2019 BY Austine IN Lists

This year I really wanted to give the blog a stronger backlist focus than it’s had in years, which included the start of a couple new features like the Thursday BackLIST as well as this one, Shelf Sequels. Each weekend I want to highlight the (relevant) backlist books for authors who have upcoming releases. A chance to possibly discover previous work if you’re new to an author, or fangirl about books you remember reading when they released!

There were a few books to choose from this week but I decided to go with The Wicked King by Holly Black! I won’t be talking about all of her previously released books but I wanted to mention a few related to TWK!

Sequel synopses are hidden to prevent spoilers! Click the “About the Book” bar to read!

You may not be aware but the FOLK OF THE AIR series is not the first in the Faerie world for Holly Black. Years ago, her Modern Faerie Tale series released which features characters that later make cameo appearances in The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King!

Modern Faerie Tale Series

Tithe by Holly Black

Modern Faerie Tales #1

Book Depository Amazon Barnes & Noble Indiebound Wordery

Welcome to the realm of very scary faeries!

Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother’s rock band until an ominous attack forces Kaye back to her childhood home. There, amid the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye soon finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms – a struggle that could very well mean her death.

Valiant by Holly Black

Modern Faerie Tales #2

Book Depository Amazon Barnes & Noble Indiebound Wordery

When seventeen-year-old Valerie runs away to New York City, she’s trying to escape a life that has utterly betrayed her. Sporting a new identity, she takes up with a gang of squatters who live in the city’s labyrinthine subway system.

But there’s something eerily beguiling about Val’s new friends. And when one talks Val into tracking down the lair of a mysterious creature with whom they are all involved, Val finds herself torn between her newfound affection for an honorable monster and her fear of what her new friends are becoming.

Ironside by Holly Black

Modern Faerie Tales #3

Book Depository Amazon Barnes & Noble Indiebound Wordery

In the realm of Faerie, the time has come for Roiben’s coronation. Uneasy in the midst of the malevolent Unseelie Court, pixie Kaye is sure of only one thing — her love for Roiben. But when Kaye, drunk on faerie wine, declares herself to Roiben, he sends her on a seemingly impossible quest. Now Kaye can’t see or speak to Roiben unless she can find the one thing she knows doesn’t exist: a faerie who can tell a lie.

Miserable and convinced she belongs nowhere, Kaye decides to tell her mother the truth — that she is a changeling left in place of the human daughter stolen long ago. Her mother’s shock and horror sends Kaye back to the world of Faerie to find her human counterpart and return her to Ironside. But once back in the faerie courts, Kaye finds herself a pawn in the games of Silarial, queen of the Seelie Court. Silarial wants Roiben’s throne, and she will use Kaye, and any means necessary, to get it. In this game of wits and weapons, can a pixie outplay a queen?

Holly Black spins a seductive tale at once achingly real and chillingly enchanted, set in a dangerous world where pleasure mingles with pain and nothing is exactly as it appears.

Last year, the first of the FOLK OF THE AIR series released and WOW was it good! Now’s the perfect time to re-read it since The Wicked King releases this coming Tuesday (and let me just say that The Wicked King is EVEN BETTER than The Cruel Prince!).

Folk of the Air Series

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Folk of the Air #1

Book Depository Amazon Barnes & Noble Indiebound Wordery

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

The Lost Sisters by Holly Black

Folk of the Air #1.5

Amazon Barnes & Noble

Sometimes the difference between a love story and a horror story is where the ending comes . . .

While Jude fought for power in the Court of Elfhame against the cruel Prince Cardan, her sister Taryn began to fall in love with the trickster, Locke.

Half-apology and half-explanation, it turns out that Taryn has some secrets of her own to reveal.

The Lost Sisters is a companion e-novella to the New York Times bestselling novel The Cruel Prince by master writer Holly Black.

The Wicked King by Holly Black

Folk of the Air #2

Book Depository Amazon Barnes & Noble Indiebound Wordery

The enchanting and bloodthirsty sequel to the New York Times bestselling novel The Cruel Prince.

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

The first lesson is to make yourself strong.

After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

  1. I think I read Tithe ages ago, so I don’t remember too much except for a particular scene in a clover patch. #spoiler I should go back and read that series sometime this year. It’s somehow tied into her current Fae books, right? Or she fine tuned later editions to bring them into line with TCP/TWK?

    • The actual storied from the Modern Faerie Tales don’t play a huge role on Folk of the Air (at least not as far as the first 2 books go) but a couple characters make an appearance and interact with the cast of TCP/TWK

  2. I love all these books, going to start Wicked King as soon as I finish my current book. Tithe was so long ago that I don’t really remember the characters though I keep hearing that some of them appear in TCP and TWK, which ones???
