Top Ten Books to Read at the Beach

If I’m being perfectly honest, I don’t like beaches. Nor have I been to one in years and maybe twice total in my life. But I imagine beaches are a place to lay back and relax for most people, where you want to ignore everything (and everyone) around you with a good book. So here are my top 10 “beach” reads, books that I found remarkably captivating, lighthearted and easy, or both.

Lighthearted and Fun

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams - if you haven’t read this yet, DON’T PANIC

One for the Money by Janet Evanovich - a bounty hunter who sucks at her job but always lands her man (plus there are 22 of these books to keep you busy on your vacation)

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris - for fans of True Blood, there’s a book for that!

Truly Captivating

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab - a beautifully rich fantasy

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - I feel like I’m always recommending this book but it’s fantastic, and a standalone so you don’t have to bring the next book with you (more room for other books!)

Cinder by Marissa Meyer - because who doesn’t want to live in a fairy tale?

Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley - another fairy tale turned on its head, and a favorite of mine

Fun & Intriguing

Geist by Philippa Ballantine - a little humor and snark, a little action and romance, the perfect blend

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost - laugh-out-loud humor, non-stop action, and some very steamy romance

Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill - a quick read with plenty of paranormal fun to go around

What book would you take to the beach?

Well hello there! I see you’ve reached the end of the post. Bummer. But perhaps I may interest you in a comment? And in case you were wondering, I’m a 20-something college grad with a piece of paper that says I know about wildlife. Reviewer of books since 2011, amateur photographer by day, and aspiring author by night. I believe animals (and books) are better than people.
