In the explosive finale to New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Prince series, Vlad is in danger of losing his bride to an enemy whose powers might prove greater than the Prince of Vampire’s….

In the wrong hands, love can be a deadly weapon.

For nearly six hundred years, Vlad Tepesh cared for nothing, so he had nothing to lose. His brutal reputation ensured that all but the most foolhardy stayed away. Now falling in love with Leila has put him at the mercy of his passions. And one adversary has found a devastating way to use Vlad’s new bride against him.

A powerful spell links Leila to the necromancer Mircea. If he suffers or dies, so does she. Magic is forbidden to vampires, so Vlad and Leila enlist an unlikely guide as they search for a way to break the spell. But an ancient enemy lies in wait, capable of turning Vlad and Leila’s closest friends against them…and finally tearing the lovers apart forever.

Overall:

Another series in the Night Huntress universe comes to an end and much like the last series finale (Up from the Grave), Into the Fire left something to be desired for me.

This series, in particular, hasn’t been keeping my attention like the Night Huntress books did. As much as I liked Vlad in the original series as a secondary character, he hasn’t won me over as a main character and neither has Leila. For Vlad, I’m just over the macho male attitude where he takes Leila’s choice away from her even in matters that literally concern her life. It gets to the point in this book where I wanted to just take him out completely. End the series with Vlad’s death. I was over it.

And Leila… this book was basically a giant pep talk for her to realize how great she is. I’ve never been the biggest fan of her since the series began and I was both annoyed and bored with her character in this book which was a weird combination but overall Not Good. There was no sass in her anymore. The only redeeming part of her character development in Into the Fire was her discovery of her heritage. Granted, I don’t know how accurately that was portrayed but there was an attempt made.

As for the story, it felt much like the others but condensed a bit because this book is clearly setting up for a new series with Ian. Which I’m not sure how I feel about but I’m hoping it’s good? Ian has been an interesting character the past eleven books, off on the fringe of the world for many of those books. I just hope his story turns out better than Vlad and Leila’s. Into the Fire did nothing for me. It had all the elements of Frost’s novels that I love but it wasn’t the writing or setting that just weren’t working. It was the characters.

Definitely a series letdown.
