Author Interview with Mary Fan | Blog Tour & Giveaway

Good morning and happy Wednesday, Knights! Yesterday was a big book release day and one of the titles hitting shelves was Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon by Mary Fan! I’m very excited to welcome the author to NovelKnight today for an exclusive interview as well as not just one, but TWO chances to win a copy of her new book!

About Mary Fan

Mary Fan is a hopeless dreamer, whose mind insists on spinning tales of “what if.” As a music major in college, she told those stories through compositions. Now, she tells them through books—a habit she began as soon as she could pick up a pencil.

Mary lives in New Jersey and has a B.A. from Princeton University. When she’s not scheming to create new worlds, she enjoys kickboxing, opera singing, and blogging about everything having to do with books.

Walk us through a day in the life of Mary Fan.

Roll out of bed about 15 minutes before I have to be out the door, then thrown on a dress (always a dress – I’m lazy and don’t like matching clothes), rush through my lazy-girl make-up routine, refill my cat’s food and water bowls, grab my purse (which I check half a dozen times for my phone, wallet, keys, and work badge… and still manage to forget one of the above half the time), and stumble out the door. Cram onto the train (I’m very good at slipping into small spaces), pull out my book, and read my way through my otherwise miserable underground commute.

Go to work (my day job is in marketing) and pop out at lunch to read more if I can. After work, I usually have some hobby thing scheduled – choir rehearsal, aerial silks class, kickboxing class, or, more recently, flying trapeze class.

The nice thing about living alone is that no one can judge me for the junk that usually functions as my dinner (I eat way too much Chipotle). I usually spend about an hour on dinner while catching up on a TV episode or two (almost always a superhero show, a sitcom, or a Star Trek show). Then somehow the next hour disappears and I’m not entirely sure how (some combo of responsibly answering emails and faffing around on social media).

Around 9pm is when I come to life. I’m pretty nocturnal by nature, and a diurnal society still hasn’t managed to bully my system into being a morning person. So around 9pm is when my creative brain wakes up, and I can get some writing or writing-related tasks (brainstorming, outlining, revising, etc.) done. On a productive night, I fall into the writing hole and don’t come out until 1am (at which point I force myself to put the computer down and go to bed because I have work the next day). On an unproductive night, I slog my way through for an hour or two before giving up and watching more TV.

Rinse and repeat.

I know asking someone’s all-time favorite book is a loaded question so what’s your current favorite read?

Thank goodness! I’m incapable of picking an all-time favorite book because it literally changes every time I pick up a new book. Right now I’m in the middle of reading Samira Ahmed’s Internment, and I’m really enjoying it (though “enjoy” feels like the wrong word because it’s actually breaking my heart). So it’s my current favorite read because I’m currently reading it.

Your characters are sent into the Hunger Games. Who wins?

Probably Anlei – though not necessarily because she’s the toughest fighter. Viceroy Kang is more ruthless, but he’d probably get himself taken down by an alliance of others (or wind up locked in battle with another power player, like the demon king). Ibsituu is the most powerful, and she doesn’t have time for this nonsense – she’d find a way to bow out of the whole mess. I imagine Anlei would try to win in a way where she could save others (like Katniss saves Peeta), though it’s hard to say if she’d succeed or not, since she’s more of a blunt weapon and not the best at devising clever plans.

You just won America’s Got Talent. What’s your talent?

Singing baroque opera while hanging upside down from aerial silks?

This morning you woke up with the ability to time travel to only one time period. Where (or more accurately “when”) would you go?

Qing Dynasty China, of course! Though I’d have to arrange it so I could access the palaces and other bastions of the elite.

Coffee or tea?

Yes, please! Coffee is required for me to get started in the morning (seriously, I fill a cup with 4 shots of espresso from the office machine). Tea is a comfort drink that makes me feel better about life. Particular favorites are earl grey, ginger (especially in the winter), and anything with lavender.

What is one piece of advice you would tell everyone?

Care less about  what others are doing with their lives and more about what you’re doing with yours. Seriously, I don’t understand why people get so up in arms about how others live when it has zero impact on their day to day. Meanwhile, it’s so easy to fall into a rut and waste years doing what you think you “should” do when you’re missing out on all the things you want to do.

When a powerful viceroy arrives with a fleet of mechanical dragons and stops an attack on Anlei’s village, the villagers see him as a godsend. They agree to give him their sacred, enchanted River Pearl in exchange for permanent protection—if he’ll marry one of the village girls to solidify the alliance. Anlei is appalled when the viceroy selects her as a bride, but with the fate of her people at stake, she sees no choice but to consent. Anlei’s noble plans are sent into a tailspin, however, when a young thief steals the River Pearl for himself.

Knowing the viceroy won’t protect her village without the jewel, she takes matters into her own hands. But once she catches the thief, she discovers he needs the pearl just as much as she does. The two embark on an epic quest across the land and into the Courts of Hell, taking Anlei on a journey that reveals more is at stake than she could have ever imagined.

With incredibly vivid world building and fast-paced storytelling, Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon is great for readers who are looking for something fresh in epic fantasy.

YA fantasy is quickly becoming my favorite this year. This book sounds like it will be one of my favorites of the year.
