This post is created in partnership with Disney Book Group.
I’ve been thinking about the books that shaped by childhood a lot lately. The ones I was excited to find at the school’s Scholastic book fairs or newly added to the library. Many of these books I haven’t picked up in years. Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness series and other Tortall books were my gateway into fantasy, followed closely by Robin McKinley’s The Blue Sword and other works, as well as Garth Nix’s Sabriel. All of which I re-read in high school but haven’t picked up since.
Though I used to be an avid re-reader, I’m finding that as I get older and I become more critical of what I read, I don’t feel as inclined to pick up an old favorite because I don’t want to replace a fond memory with one not as favorable.
This year was actually the first time in a long time that I picked up a childhood favorite and re-read it, and that was the Artemis Fowl series.
I’ll be honest, I think part of me regrets re-reading those books from a reviewer standpoint, especially as I noticed things that 10-year-old me likely never picked up on. At the same time, it was. . . wonderful.
It’s such a fun series and had I not picked the books up again, I would have missed out on all the things that my younger self did miss.
Have you re-read any of your childhood favorites?
I’m now planning on checking out a few of mine and taking a trip back in time, as it were. I’ve loved seeing some of those series get a new look to reach new readers. Take the Artemis Fowl series. All the books received brand new covers and a whole new group of readers have the chance to discover them now! And with the movie coming up…
Y’all knew there was an Artemis Fowl movie coming, right? If not, check out the trailer below!
ANYWAY, I’m getting sidetracked. What I wanted to chat about today was not only that returning to childhood favorites can be awesome, but so can spin-offs of childhood favorites!
It’s been years since the last Artemis Fowl book released but now it’s time for Artemis to step aside and leave the adventuring to his younger brothers who, I promise you, are just as prone to getting into trouble (maybe even more so than their older brother)!
The Fowl Twins kicks off the first in a new series by Eoin Colfer that returns us to the Fowl Manor and the world of the People. It’s the perfect blend of fantasy and science fiction, and I’m so excited that we’re getting a new series!
You can grab the first book NOW and I’ll leave more info below, AND (oh yes, there’s an “and”) I’m excited to partner with Disney Book Group to offer you the chance to win not just one, but TWO copies of The Fowl Twins!
Why would you need two copies of the same book, you may ask? WELL you can share with a friend or family member, donate to your local library, spread the Fowl love, it’s up to you!
The Fowl Twins, as I said, is the first in a new series so it’s perfect for fans of the Artemis Fowl books AND readers new to this world. Check it out below and don’t forget to visit the official book page!

With all the hallmarks that made the Artemis Fowl series so popular, this hilarious spinoff adventure stars Artemis' younger brothers, along with a nefarious nobleman, a shadowy nun, and a fairy intern, and a maverick troll.
One week after their eleventh birthday, the Fowl twins--scientist Myles, and Beckett, the force of nature--are left in the care of house security (NANNI) for a single night. In that time they befriend a troll who has clawed his way through the earth's crust to the surface. Unfortunately for the troll, he is being chased by a nefarious nobleman and an interrogating nun, who both need the magical creature for their own gain, as well as a fairy-in-training who has been assigned to protect him. The boys and their new troll best friend escape and go on the run. Along the way they get shot at, kidnapped, buried, arrested, threatened, killed (temporarily), and discover that the strongest bond in the world is not the one forged by covalent electrons in adjacent atoms, but the one that exists between a pair of twins.
